CHAPTER 1 – HOW I TAUGHT MY GRANDMOTHER TO READ 1. STORY IN 5 MINUTES The narrator, a twelve-year-old girl, spends her holidays with her grandparents in a village in Karnataka. Every week she reads a Kannada serial, Kashi Yatre , to her grandmother, Krishnakka, who cannot read because she never had the opportunity to attend school. One day the narrator goes away to attend a wedding. During her absence, a new episode of the serial arrives. The grandmother is unable to read it herself and feels deeply helpless and dependent. She realizes that education is essential for independence. At the age of sixty-two, she decides to learn the Kannada alphabet. She asks her granddaughter to become her teacher. The granddaughter teaches her sincerely. By the time of Dasara, the grandmother is able to read the novel independently.
